Iran`s Majlis security committee investigates U.S. drone incursion

TEHRAN, Dec. 11 (MNA) – National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Majlis discussed the recent violation of the country’s airspace by a U.S. spy drone during an extraordinary meeting on Saturday, Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi announced. A number of Foreign Ministry officials attended the meeting. An advanced RQ-170 unmanned U.S. spy plane had been downed by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic. The footage of the drone was broadcast on Iranian national television on December 8. “The members of the committee called on the Foreign Ministry to vigorously investigate legal aspects of the issue,” Boroujerdi, who is the chairman of the committee, told on Saturday. The Foreign Ministry summoned Swiss Ambassador Livia Leu Agosti on December 8 to protest about the U.S. move. Iran and the United States do not have diplomatic relations and the Swiss Embassy in Tehran hosts the U.S. Interests Section in Iran. Boroujerdi added, “According to international law, the U.S. recent move is a blatant violation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s airspace.” “The U.S. should be aware that it has to adopt a different attitude toward the Islamic Republic of Iran as a powerful country that has such advanced military and technological capabilities that it could down an ultra-modern aircraft in a way that it remained intact,” he said. He also stated, “The action taken by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a source of national pride and illustrates the meticulousness, vigilance, and capability of our country’s armed forces. And besides that, it was a wake-up call to other foreign countries that have a presence in the region.” “Any similar move by other countries against the Islamic Republic of Iran will be met with a strong response,” Boroujerdi added. In addition, the MP announced that the committee also plans to discuss the issue at a session on Sunday, December 11.
