GOVT TO HEED PEOPLE'S, SULTAN'S VIEWS ON YOGYAKARTA'S SPECIAL STATUS

Jakarta, Sept. 29 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government would not act "arbitrarily" against the people and regional government of Yogyakarta in relation with the drafting of a law on the region's administrative status but also take their views into consideration.

"Yogyakarta's special status is important. Let us listen to the views of the people of Yogyakarta and Sri Sultan. So we can see what is good for the administration there. There is no need for threatening each other. The government will not treat Yogyakarta arbitrarily ," President Yudhoyono said at a gathering with journalists at the State Palace here on late Sunday.
According to the President, the drafting of a Bill on the Special Region of Yogyakarta should not be made an issue because the government was doing it with three basic principles as its guide, namely the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia, democracy, and Yogyakarta's special position.
"In fact, the Bill will provide certainty for the future of Yogyakarta. I trust Sri Sultan. As a reformist, he will give his views in accordance with realities. We hope to have a good law for Yogyakarta and Indonesia as a whole," the head of state said.
On the occasion, President Yudhyono hosted an iftar (fast breaking) reception for around 100 journalists. The President was accompanied among others by Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, Minister/Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, and Communication and Informatics Minister M Nuh.
