BUS-VS-BUS COLLISION KILLS FIVE IN REMBANG, CENTRAL JAVA

Rembang, Central Java, Sept. 29 (ANTARA) - Five people were killed in a head-on collision between Hiba Utama bus and Sinar Mandiri bus at Kragan village, Rembang District, on Monday at around 6 am Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The five fatalities included the drivers of the two buses and three passengers of Sinar Mandiri, Adjunct Commissioner Zamroni of the Rembang Police office, said here on Monday.
The Sinar Mandiri bus came from eastersn direction heading to Semarang (Central Java) while the Hiba Utama bus came from the west when the accident happened.
"It seemed the Hiba Utama bus driver was sleepy and hit the Sinar Mandiri bus which came from the opposite direction," he said.
The Pati-Rembang road was deserted when the accident occurred.
A number of passengers were injured in the accident and rushed to Rembang Heneral Hospital for medical treatment.
Muslims in Indonesia and other countries will celebrate Eid Fitr on October 1 and 2, 2008, prompting them to return to their hometowns to be with their relatives.
The number of home-bound travelers in Indonesia this year is estimated to reach around 15 million, causing heavy traffics on many highways and roads in the run-up to the Muslim festivity.
