Hazarika and T V Rajeswar named in India's annual civilian awards

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) Late lyricist and singer Bhupen Hazarika and former civil servant and state governor T V Rajeswar have been chosen for the Padma Vibhushan award, India's second highest civilian honour, in this year's Padma awards. Late cartoonist Mario de Miranda, 88-year-old eminent painter K G Subramanyan and well known orthopaedician Kantilal H Sancheti are the remaining three who have been named for Padma Vibushan. The list of awardees announced on the eve of India's Republic Day does not contain any Bharat Ratna, the top Indian civilian award. Vocalist Bhimsen Joshi was the last awardee in this category in 2008. Padma Vibhushan is second in order, followed by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The list has 109 names, including five Padma Vibhushans, 27 Padma Bhushans and 77 Padma Shris from various disciplines and fields of activity. 14 people in the category of Foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and posthumous figure among them. The list includes 19 women. Film actors Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi, director Mira Nair, painter Jatin Das, London-based sculpture artist Anish Kapoor and Carnatic instrumentalists T V Gopalakrishnan and M S Gopalakrishnan, B.Muthuraman (Managing Director of Tata Steel), Subbiah Vellayan (industrialist), eminent cardiologist Devi Prasad Shetty, cancer specialist Suresh H Advani, former Central Vigilance Commission chief N Vittal, former Ambassador to the US Ronen Sen who played a crucial role in the Indo-US nuclear deal also figure among those awarded Padma Bhushan. Noted musician Vanraj Bhatia, playwright Moti Lal Khemmu, famous Bhajan singer Anup Jalota, Malayalam film director Priyadarshan, industrialists Priya Paul and Swati Piramal, eminent diabetologist V Mohan, Marathi theatre playwright Satish Alekar, Vice Chancellor of Mata Vaishno Devi University Rameshwar Nath Koul Bamezai, agriculture scientist K L Chadha, woman cricketer Jhulan Goswami, former hockey Olympian Zaffar Iqbal, archer Limba Ram and yesteryear cricket commentator Ravi Chaturvedi figure in the list of Padma Shris.
