Turkey welcomes Annan's appointment as special envoy for Syria

ANKARA (A.A) - Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced Friday that Turkey welcomed the appointment of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as the UN's and Arab League's joint Special Envoy for Syria. In a writtent statement released on Friday, the Turkish MFA said that, based on a decision of the UN General Assembly on February 16, Annan, as part of his good will mission, will hold talks in order to end violence in Syria, overcome the humanitarian crisis, and open up the path for the political transition process according to the legitimate demands and expectations of the Syrian people. Kofi Annan's assistance would be chosen from an Arabic country. We believe that Annan was an appropriate choice with his knowledge and experiences, the MFA said. We have full belief that Annan will fulfill his duties in the best way possible, the MFA stressed in its statement. Turkey is ready to extend all possible assistance to Kofi Annan so that the bloodshed and tears in Syria come to an end, the MFA also said.
