French spokesperson: no new law on Armenian allegations before parliament's next legislative year
PARIS (A.A) - French Parliament will probably not adopt a new law on Armenian allegations regarding 1915 incidents.
French government spokesperson Valerie Pecresse said on Wednesday that it would be almost impossible to pass a new law --criminalizing denial of Armenian allegations-- before the parliament's next legislative year began.
The government will work on a new draft that would be compatible with the Constitutional Council's ruling, she added.
The Constitutional Council annulled on Tuesday the law, saying that it was against freedom of expression and communication.
Pecresse said that the Parliament would be recessed next week due to upcoming elections.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy, after the annulment of the law yesterday, gave directives to the government to prepare a new draft law.
The annulled law was penalizing denial of the Armenian allegations with one-year prison term and fine of 45,000 euros.
