Swiss Open: M'sian Shuttler Daren Moves On, Zulfadli Stumbles

KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysian shuttler Liew Daren advanced into the third round of the men's singles in the Swiss Open championship in Basel, Switzerland on Thursday. Liew outclassed Hsu Jen Hoo of Taiwan 21-19, 21-8 in the second round held early today and would take on Portuguese Pedro Martins in the next round. Another Malaysian singles, Zulfadli Zulkifli however was shown the exit by Stilian Makarski of Bulgaria 22-20, 20-22, 21-17. In the men's doubles, qualifier Goh V Shem/Teo Kok Siang of Malaysia will face top seed Chai Biao/Guo Zhendong of China in the second round. Goh and Teo earlier beat Ingo Kindervater/Johannes Schoettler of Germany 21-16, 21-17 in the first round. Malaysian doubles Gan Teik Chai/Tan Bin Shen, however, ended their campaign after losing to Indonesian Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan 20-22, 18-21. Other Malaysians marching on to the second round are women's doubles Chin Eei Hui/Wong Pei Tty and Ng Hui Ern/Ng Hui Lin as well as mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying. Chin/Wong beat Choi Hye In/Kim So Young of South Korea 15-21, 21-18, 21-16 while the Ng sisters crushed Marion Gruber and Sanya Herzig of Switzerland 21-11, 21-12. Fifth seeded Chan and Goh outclassed minnows Valery Antrashchenkov/Anna Kobceva of Ukraine 21-16, 21-19. -- BERNAMA
