Malaysia And Brunei Sign MoU For Joint Demarcation, Survey Of Land Boundary

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), March 20 (Bernama)-- Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint demarcation and survey of the land boundary between both countries. Malaysia was represented by secretary-general of the Foreign Ministry, Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahman, and Brunei by the permanent secretary of its Finance Ministry, Hisham Mohd Hanifah. "The signing of the MoU took place in conjunction with the 8th alaysia-Brunei Darussalam Meeting on the implementation of the 2009 exchange of letters," said a statement from Wisma Putra, here, Tuesday. It said the MoU provided the terms of reference and modalities for the demarcation of the land boundary between the two countries. Both countries have agreed to carry out the exercise based on the five existing land boundary agreements of Feb 4 1920, Aug 25 1931, Oct 31 1931, Feb 24 1933 and Nov 4 1939. "In the areas where no land boundary agreement exists as yet, both countries shall negotiate, solely on the basis of the watershed principle, a definition of the precise course of the boundary. "This exercise will set yet another milestone for Malaysia and Brunei in moving forward towards a strengthened and more comprehensive bilateral cooperation and partnership for mutual benefit," the statement said. -- BERNAMA
