Melbourne Airport To Get 4th Terminal

MELBOURNE, March 21 (Bernama) -- Tiger Airways will be one of the airlines to use Melbourne Airport's fourth terminal. Construction of the new US$1 billion terminal, an extension of the existing major building, is expected to begin in October, the Herald Sun reported. It said major road works to clear traffic congestion are well under way. The new terminal, likely to be the home to Tiger Airways and potentially Jetstar, will comprise two new multi-storey car parks as part of a ground transport hub, giving access to taxis, shuttle buses and public transport. The terminal is designed to cater for up to 20 million passengers a year and will occupy 35,000 square metres. Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Chris Woodruff said the project's architects were still working on a final design for the facility. He said the airport had moved two years early in anticipation of increasing passenger numbers to 3.5 per cent a year to ensure the facilities would be ready as the aviation market grows. -- BERNAMA
