Malaysia May Consider Employing Maids From Myanmar - M'sian PM
From Leslean Arshad
NAYPYITAW (Myanmar), March 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia may consider bringing in
workers, including maids from Myanmar, to overcome a shortage of foreign maids
following a two-year freeze on maids by the Indonesian government.
Malaysia has agreed to consider the request by Myanmar during Prime Minister
Najib Tun Razak's two-day official visit to the country which ended Thursday.
Najib told Malaysian reporters at the end of his visit today that there was
a possibility that Myanmar nationals be employed as house maids but added that
further discussions would be needed.
"We need further discussions about the proposal, we do not know the terms
and conditions. But if the terms are acceptable, we certainly can consider
that," he said.
Najib said Malaysia was receptive of the proposal to employ maids from
Myanmar.
Describing the Myanmar people as "polite people", Najib said it would not
be that difficult to pursue the proposal if they were able to fit in culturally
with Malaysia's way of life.
Najib said he had informed Myanmar that about 250,000 Myanmar nationals had
registered under the 6P Programme.
