FORESTRY MINISTRY, 11 MASS ORGANIZATIONS TO COOPERATE TO REGREEN CRITICAL LAND

Jakarta, Oct 9 (ANTARA) - The Forestry Ministry and 11 mass organizations have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in accelerating the campaign to plant trees on Indonesia's barren lands.

"The main purpose of this cooperation is to encourage, accelerate and speed up tree planting programs on critical lands in or outside forest areas in Indonesia," Forestry Minister MS Kaban said when receiving representatives of the 11 mass organizations here on Thursday.

He said the tree planting movement was needed at present. "About 30 million hectares of land in Indonesia need to be planted with trees," he said.

"Therefore, the support and cooperation of various parties are badly needed considering that the amount of government funds earmarked for the purpose is relatively limited," he said.

He said "we must be optimistic and make whatever efforts are possible and effective. Though the results will not be felt immediately, they will in the future."
The minister expressed hope that by expanding cooperation, including with mass organizations and private businesses, the National Movement for Land and Forest Rehabilitation (Gerhan) program could be accelerated.

He said his ministry had also tried to expand cooperation, including with educational institutions with a program named "Planting Now, Harvesting Later."
