Thailand Lifts Tsunami Warning

By Jamaluddin Muhammad BANGKOK, April 12 (Bernama) -– Thailand has lifted its tsunami warning as there is no threat of tsunami in the country, following an 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Aceh, Indonesia on Wednesday. The warning was lifted by the National Disaster Warning Centre. Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the country was still put on alert although the warning was lifted due to the possible impact of the 8.9 magnitude aftershocks. She said small scales of wave were reported in the Andaman Sea off Thailand. Earlier, Yingluck held an urgent Cabinet meeting at the Government House here, activating the country's tsunami contingency plan. Various ministries have been mobilised to alert the people of the tsunami threat through television, short message service and on-the-ground announcement. Health workers, as well as soldiers, have been put on standby earlier to assist people in need of assistance. Earlier, evacuation orders were issued in six southern provinces, namely Krabi, Phuket, Phangga, Ranong, Satul and Trang, to enable the people to move to higher ground. -- BERNAMA
