Two Moderate Earthquakes Hit Sumatra And Sulawesi

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- Two moderate earthquakes hit Sumatra and Sulawesi, Indonesia early Tuesday morning. The first measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit an area off the west coast of northern Sumatera at 12.05am Tuesday, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department in a statement here, Tuesday. The quake occurred 496km southwest of Simeulue and 984km southwest of Kampar, Perak. Meanwhile, the second quake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit Sulawesi at 2.01am. The quake's epicentre was 149km northwest of Kendari and 880km southeast of Semporna, Sabah. Both the quakes did not pose any tsunami threat, said the statement. -- BERNAMA
