Sudan Is Safe For Business, Malaysian Investors Assured

By Siti Fatimah Ahmad KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 (Bernama) -- The Republic of Sudan is a safe country to do business and invest and more Malaysians have been urged to invest in the country. In delivering this message to the Malaysian business community in Sudan and in Malaysia, Sudan's Ambassador to Malaysia Nadir Yousif Eltayeb said that the situation in Sudan was quiet and businesses have resumed as usual. South Sudan broke away from Sudan in July last year after the independence vote, following the 2005 peace treaty. Tensions had heightened in Sudan following South Sudan's occupation of the Heglig oil region earlier this month. Heglig, which is internationally recognised as being part of Sudan, is not recognised as such by South Sudan and its troops had recaptured it last Friday. "Even in the conflict area, Heglig, the (Sudan) government managed to control the situation and now we are repairing the infrastructure and expecting to resume producing and exporting oil as usual from Heglig and other areas affected during the conflict," Nadir told a press conference at his office here, Tuesday. Nadir said the Sudan government wanted to send a strong message to the business people and others from Malaysia interested to invest in Sudan that the overall security situation in the African country was under control. Asked on the economic impact to Sudan during the conflict, Nadir said the economy had remained stable, and that South Sudan's attempts to weaken the Sudanese government had failed. "The South Sudan attacked Heglig to stop oil production and to ruin Sudan’s economy and create difficult life for citizens but it never happened. "Businesses are running as usual in Khartoum and whatever amount of oil you want you can get it from the petrol station and all the oil companies are operating." --BERNAMA
