Walkathon Aims To Raise Awareness About Recycling

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- The Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) will organise a walkathon in Klang Sunday in an effort to educate the public to reduce, reuse and recycle and respect Mother Nature for the sake of the next generation. The “4R Walkathon” is a community event to create awareness on the importance of recycling as well as raising public awareness and preparedness in view of floods in Klang town, said a committee member, Vinod Naidu Munikrishnayya. Some 1,500 youths are expected to participate in the event, which has an environmental twist and is scheduled to be flagged off at 6.30 am, he told Bernama. According to the competition rules, the participants will be divided into groups and are required to walk seven kilometres around Taman Sri Andalas and Klang and collect recyclable materials along the way. The team that collects more waste will be declared winners and awarded prizes, Vinod Naidu said. The Youth Empowerment programme (YEP), founded by the Hindu Youth Organisation of Port Klang (HYOPK), is supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Selangor Government and the Klang Municipal Council. -- BERNAMA
