Chile Too Hot For Malaysia In Olympic Qualifiers

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 (Bernama) -- National women's hockey squad continued their poor run in the Olympic qualifiers in Kakamigahara, Japan, when they lost 1-2 against Chile on Sunday. The loss today to Chile was the third defeat for the Malaysians under the guidance of former international Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim. They had lost 0-4 to Azerbaijan in the opening match before being whipped 8-0 by host Japan while the other match was a 2-2 draw with lowly Belarus. Fazilla Slyvester Silin gave Malaysians an early cheer in today's match when she scored the opening goal through a penalty corner in the 49th minute but the hot Chileans replied with two quick goals in the 66th and 69th minutes. The win put Chile in third spot with seven points while Malaysia, already out of contention for a berth in the Olympics, now lies in fifth position with a single point. On Thursday, Chile will meet Azerbaijan while Malaysia meet Austria in their fifth match. --BERNAMA
