PSC On Lynas Rare Earth Processing Plant To Visit Plant Location

JOHOR BAHARU (Johor, Malaysia), May 7 (Bernama) -- The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on the rare earth processing plant, Lynas, is expected to visit the plant location in Gebeng, Pahang state this Thursday. Its chairman Mohamed Khaled Nordin said during the meeting, the PSC would meet with local residents to know better their problems with regard to the Lynas project. "We will study the various issues raised such as pollution and radioactive effects and other matters to ensure the people's safety," he said after officially opening the Sejahtera 1Malaysia Terminal tuition centre, near here, Sunday. Khaled said the PSC would also be obtaining information based on scientific studies by experts on rare earth processing. He said the PSC had so far held meetings with the relevant ministry and agencies and the outcome would be tabled in parliament before being disseminated to the public. Meanwhile, Khaled said he was surprised with the attitude of the opposition who declined to be part of the PSC although all the information gathered on the project were based on scientific studies. "We are different from the PSC on Electoral Reform as we rely on scientific studies and cannot take the middle road in getting the agreements of all quarters. "So, I don't understand why they (opposition) refused to be involved in getting the real facts," he said. -- BERNAMA
