Hearing Of Iranian Extradition Adjourned To June 25

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- The Sessions Court hearing of an extradition application by the Malaysian authorities against an Iranian, wanted by the Thai Government for alleged involvement in a bombing incident in Bangkok on Feb 14, has been adjourned to June 25. Judge S. M. Komathy Suppiah set the date after Masoud Sedaghat Zadeh's counsel, Mohd Nashir Hussin, asked for the adjourment as he needed time to file an affidavit. "We will file an affidavit in 10 days as we have not received any instruction from Masoud's father," said Mohd Nashir. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kamal Baharin Omar, representing the Attorney-General's (AG) Chambers did not object to the adjournment. He said he received the adjourment letter from the counsel on May 25, and informed the court that he would file an affidavit-in-reply within two weeks. On March 15, the AG's Chambers had submitted a supporting affidavit through senior federal counsel Swandra Kim Chu Ramachandran, who is attached to its international affairs division. The affidavit stated that the extradition order be issued against Masoud under Article 7 of the Extradition Treaty between the British Government and the Siamese Government in 1911, which also applied to Malaysia. Masoud was detained under the Immigration Act at 3.30pm on Feb 15, at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang (Malaysia), while on transit to Iran, upon arrival from Bangkok. He was detained on a request from Bangkok after the Thai authorities suspected he had links with two Iranians who were nabbed for bombing incidents in the Thai capital. -- BERNAMA
