Malaysia Marine Research Institute Receives International Recognition
KOTA KINABALU (Sabah,Malaysia), May 29 (Bernama) -- The Borneo Marine
Research Institute of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has been recognised as
International Ocean Institute’s (IOI) Focal Point for Malaysia.
UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kamaruzaman Ampon praised the Borneo Marine
Research Institute for rising up to the international level through a visionary
approach and hard work.
This recognition was conveyed to UMS by the Executive Director of IOI who
expressed confidence in the ability of Borneo Marine Research Institute headed
by its director, Prof Dr Saleem Mustafa, to carry out the IOI mission.
The mission is to promote education, training and research to enhance the
peaceful uses of ocean space and its resources, their management and regulation,
as well as the protection and conservation of the marine environment guided by
the concept of the Common Heritage of Mankind.
"I'm also happy to note that UMS is now in a position to live up to its
motto of gaining international recognition through excellence in aspiration and
pursuit of knowledge," said Kamaruzaman in a statement, here on Tuesday.
The Vice-Chancellor added that being a focal point for a prestigious
international organisation such as IOI which has a Consultative Status at the
United Nations, Malaysia would be able to play an active role in highlighting
the importance of marine heritage and the global attention and support that it
needs for the benefit of the country, Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
