Malaysia Marine Research Institute Receives International Recognition

KOTA KINABALU (Sabah,Malaysia), May 29 (Bernama) -- The Borneo Marine Research Institute of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has been recognised as International Ocean Institute’s (IOI) Focal Point for Malaysia. UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kamaruzaman Ampon praised the Borneo Marine Research Institute for rising up to the international level through a visionary approach and hard work. This recognition was conveyed to UMS by the Executive Director of IOI who expressed confidence in the ability of Borneo Marine Research Institute headed by its director, Prof Dr Saleem Mustafa, to carry out the IOI mission. The mission is to promote education, training and research to enhance the peaceful uses of ocean space and its resources, their management and regulation, as well as the protection and conservation of the marine environment guided by the concept of the Common Heritage of Mankind. "I'm also happy to note that UMS is now in a position to live up to its motto of gaining international recognition through excellence in aspiration and pursuit of knowledge," said Kamaruzaman in a statement, here on Tuesday. The Vice-Chancellor added that being a focal point for a prestigious international organisation such as IOI which has a Consultative Status at the United Nations, Malaysia would be able to play an active role in highlighting the importance of marine heritage and the global attention and support that it needs for the benefit of the country, Indo-Pacific region and beyond. -- BERNAMA
