ONLY ONE HIT BY POLICE FIRE IN TAKALAR LANDOWNERSHIP PROTEST
Jakarta, Oct 13 (ANTARA) - South Sulawesi Regional Police Chief Insp Gen Sisno Adiwinoto said only one person was hit by a bullet when police opened fire during a land-ownership protest in Takalar district, South Sulawesi, on Friday.
"The victim who was hit by a bullet was admitted to a police hospital. His injury was not so serious and he is expected to go home in the coming few days ," Adiwinoto said here on Monday.
He said three other residents also suffered injuries but not because of bullets, possibly because of scratches of other objects when they ran way after police tried to dispersed them.
Police opened fire when they tried to disperse a group of local residents who forced their way into a plantation area which they claimed was theirs.
According to the regional police chief, South Sulawesi police were now investigating members of the local police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit who are suspected to have fired at the protesters.
"We very much regret the shooting incident by individual members of Brimob who were on duty to safeguard the plantation area of state-owned plantation company PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PN) XIV in Takalar," he said.
He said tthe suspects were now under investigation process by the South Sulawesi police.
On Friday, October 10, four people were reported to have suffered injuries when police tried to disperse a group of local residents who claimed and tried to enter the plantation area.
