LABUAN POWER PLANT TO BECOME OPERATIONAL IN FIRST QUARTER 2009

Bandung, W Java, Oct 13 (ANTARA) - One of the two coal-fired power plants (PLTUs) with a combined capacity of 600 MW in Labuan, Banten, is expected to become operational and connected with the Java-Bali power network in the first semester of 2009, a spokesman said.
"At the end of the first quarter of 2009, one of the two PLTUs in Labuan with a capacity of 300 MW is expected to become operational and the other one will follow later," vice president director of state-owned electricity company PLN Rudiantara said here on Monday.
The Labuan PLTU projects are part of the 10,000 MW PLTU program being carried out in the face of a power crisis predicted to take place in Indonesia in 2009.
He said there were two other PLTUs whose construction was being accelerated, namely one in Indramayu district in West Java and the other one in Rembang district, East Java.
"Even though only one unit will be connected with the Java-Bali network soon, the additional supply of 300 MW to the network will be very significant," Rudiantara said.
He said the other unit was expected to be connected to the Java-Bali power network in the second quarter of 2009.
The PLTU project is being carried out by contractor Chengda Engineering Corporation and a consortium of Truba Jurong of China with an investment worth US$338.221 million.
