GOVT TO SIGN THREE MINING WORK CONTRACTS
Jakarta, Oct 13 (ANTARA) - The government expects to conclude three mining work contracts before the end of 2008, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said here on Monday.
The minister said the three work contracts would be signed with PT Rio Tinto Indonesia, PT Jogya Magasa Mining and PT Antam-BHP Billiton.
"The signing of the contracts will indicate that investment in the mining sector in Indonesia is still attractive," he said.
With the signing of the contracts, he said, his ministry was optimistic that its mineral investment target of US$21 billion in 2008 would be exceeded, despite the fact that the world now was gripped by a global financial crisis.
The mining projects were also expected to increase state revenues and have a mulitplier effect on the country's economy, particularly in the mining regions while absorbing a lot of workers.
Rio Tito would engage in nickel processing in the Lasamphala mining area which shared borders with two districts, namely Morowali district in Central Sulawesi and Konawe district in South East Sulawesi provinces.
Jogya Magasa Mining, in partnership with Australian company Indomine, would process iron sand in Kulon Progo district, Yogyakarta.
Antam-BHP Billiton would set up a nickel mining venture in Maluku province.
