Strong Earthquake Hits South of Java

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck south of Java, Indonesia, at 7.18 pm on Monday, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department. The epicentre of the quake was 185km southwest of Sukabumi, Indonesia, and 1,117km southeast of Johor Baharu, Johor, the department said in a statement. No tsunami threat was reported, it added. In JAKARTA, Bernama correspondent Ahmad Fuad Yahya quoted the Indonesian meteorological, climatology and geophysical agency as saying that the quake caused tremors which were felt in Bandung, Tasikmalaya, Bogor and southern Jakarta. The agency said the quake occurred in the sea at a depth of 24km, and that there had been no reports as yet of injury and damage to property. -- BERNAMA
