Malaysia Not Keeping Quiet On Syrian Issue - Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is not keeping quiet but has a firm stand on developments occurring in Syria, said its Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay. He said that Malaysia, through the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), was pressing the parties concerned to find the best solution to the developments in Syria. "Malaysia also supports the resolution raised by Kofi Annan (special envoy given the mandate by the Arab League-UN), that is, the six-point plan where Malaysia supports the plan in stopping the violence and enabling negotiations to continue in resolving the Syrian issue peacefully," he said. Kohilan said Malaysia also gave its support to the Arab League's peace plan during the OIC special meeting in Jeddah last November. "On June 1, at the special session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Malaysia also made a statement condemning the mass killing in Houla town on May 25 and demanded that those responsible to be tried in court," he told the Dewan Rakyat (People's Hall) replying to a supplementary question by Pan Malaysian-Islamic Party representative, Nasharudin Mat Isa on Wednesday. Nasharudin wanted to know Malaysia's latest stand on the developments occurring in Syria involving humanitarian issues when civilians are killed. -- BERNAMA
