Malaysian Handicraft Sets Up Production Centre in Sarawak

KUCHING (Sarawak,Malaysia), June 23 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia) has developed two new infrastructures to produce the "parang ilang" (Ilang Sword) and traditional bags in Sarawak, said its state director Sahaimi Abdul Manaf here on Saturday. He said the two facilities located in Sibu and Serian were part of the corporation's efforts under the entrepreneurship development programme in Sarawak. Besides that, Malaysian Handicraft has also upgraded a "songket" weaving workshop in Mang's Village, Samarahan, he said during a speech at the Entrepreneurship and Malaysian Craft Promotion Carnival here. The 10-day carnival participated by 70 entrepreneurs from various states and Brunei Darussalam was launched by Assistant Minister for Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development, Mohd Naroden Majais. Sahaimi added that under the corporation's research and development programme, five entrepreneurs from Sarawak are also involved in a series of design labs for ceramic, batik and forest products. --BERNAMA
