Malaysian Foreign Ministry Summons Indonesian Envoy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- The foreign ministry on Monday summoned the Indonesian Embassy’s charge d’affaires to express the government’s regret and concerns over violent acts by protesters at Malaysian buildings in the republic and provocative comments against Malaysia by an Indonesian politician. In a statement here, the ministry said that during the meeting at Wisma Putra, it urged the Indonesian Government to take appropriate action to address the violence and provocations against Malaysia in the republic. "The envoy assured that the Indonesian Government gravely viewed and regretted the attacks on the Malaysian Government's premises," it said. The statement said the envoy had also concurred that the sentiments expressed by the Indonesian legislative assembly representative did not reflect the stand of the Indonesian Government or Parliament. "He had further assured that pertinent measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents," it added. Wisma Putra also disclosed that Foreign Minister Anifah Aman was in the midst of contacting his Indonesian counterpart who was overseas. The ministry, through the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta, submitted two diplomatic notes to the republic's foreign ministry on June 22, to state the government's stand, regret and concern over the incidents. Yesterday, Anifah said the violent acts by a group of protestors representing Indonesia's Pemuda Pancasila in front of the Malaysian Embassy in Kuningan and Malaysia Hall in Menteng, Jakarta on June 22, as well as the provocative comments by an Indonesian politician in the programme,'Neo Democrazy' which was broadcast by Metro TV on June 21, should be condemned. He said the violence had resulted in damage to Malaysia Hall and its vicinity, and threatened the security of officers, staff and their families. -- BERNAMA
