Give Something Up to Ensure Long-Term Stability - Former Malaysian PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysians, regardless of race, should give something up to achieve long-term economy and social stability. "No race should think of taking everything for themselves. You must accept that other people also have a share. "All races should concentrate on growing the economy together, so that everyone's share is larger, and reduce the disparities," he said in his speech on 'Politics and Business: The Malaysian Connection' here on Thursday. Dr Mahathir said during the 1955 election, the Malays had decided to give up seats in areas where the voters were mostly Malays. "To ensure all races work together, Malay constituencies were given to their Chinese and Indian partners and ensured they supported these candidates from the alliance," he said. Also present was his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali. -- BERNAMA
