Malaysian Government to Investigate Import of Steel Wire Rods from Five Countries - Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- The government will initiate a preliminary investigation on the import of steel wire rods from five countries, Chinese Taipei, China, Indonesia, South Korea and Turkey. "The government has determined that there was sufficient evidence of dumping, injury and a causal link," the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) said in a statement on Thursday. The investigation was initiated following a petition for the imposition of anti-dumping duty on imports of steel wire rods from a domestic producer. The petitioner alleged that steel wire rods orginating from the said countries were being brought into Malaysia at a price much lower than that in their domestic markets. It was also claimed that this is causing material injury to the domestic industry. MITI said the investigation is in accordance with the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties Act 1993 and its related regulations. "A preliminary determination will be made within 120 days from the date of initiation. "If the final determination is affirmative, the government may impose an anti-dumping duty at the rate that would rectify the situation," it added. The ministry urged all interested parties, importers, foreign producers, exporters and associations, to request for the questionnaires in relation to the investigation from its office no later than July 11. Interested parties are also invited to make their views known in writing, in particular, by replying to the questionnaires with supporting evidence to MITI on or before Aug 5. In the event that no additional information is received within the specified period, the government may make its preliminary findings based on the available facts. -- BERNAMA
