Malaysia's Import Of Agricultural Goods From Taiwan Set To Soar

By Farhana Poniman KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's imports of agricultural goods from Taiwan are expected to surge to US$3 million this year, given the country's steady economy and relatively good purchasing power. Deputy representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office here, Lin Min Li, said last year, Malaysia imported US$2.4 million worth of fruits and vegetables from Taiwan, a 144 per cent increase from 2010. "Currently, there are three major Malaysian companies that import fruits and vegetables from Taiwan, and we are expecting the number to increase," he told Bernama after officiating the Taiwan Agricultural Products Fair 2012 at Carrefour MidValley Saturday. Euro-Atlantic Sdn Bhd's managing director, Ebby Loo, said the company has been working with the Taiwan Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur since 2010 to bring in good quality agricultural goods from Chang Hua county. Loo said the Taiwan Trade Centre has been facilitating the trade by providing them with promotions and support. "We imported three containers back in 2010 and doubled them last year. This year we target to import eight containers of fruits and vegetables from the country," she said. Some of the famous agricultural products from the county, which has a pleasant climate and a developed irrigation facilities, are grapes, white bittergourd, guava and jumbo watermelon. -- BERNAMA
