RUPIAH WEAKENS TO RP9,800 PER DOLLAR ON THURSDAY MORNING

Jakarta, Oct. 16 (ANTARA) - The rupiah tumbled to 9,800 per US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market on Thursday morning,
as market players were concerned about the global economic crisis which tended to turn into a recession despite the US government's fresh fund injection into the market.

The rupiah traded at Rp9,800/9,810 per US dollar, down 28 points from Rp9,772/9,800 per US dollar the day before.
PT Finan Corpindo President Director Edwin Sinaga said here on Thursday the rupiah's plunge was not a problem because all main currencies in Asian countries had also tumbled due to the current global financial crisis.
The rupiah weakened due to the global economic crisis, and not because of Indonesia's economic fundamental factors, he said.
Indonesia's central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), had anticipated the rupiah's slumping down by monitoring and intervening through its various instruments, according to him.
Even if the rupiah's exchange rate dropped to Rp10,000 per US dollars, it would not be a problem as long as the Indonesian economy continued to grow, he said.
He said BI was continuing to watch foreign banks trading in US dollars to prevent speculative dealings.
