MALUKU GOVT TO SPEND RP32 BILLION ON FREE 12-YEAR EDUCATION PROGRAM
Ambon, Oct 16 (ANTARA) - The Maluku provincial administration will allocate at least Rp32 billion from its 2009 budget to implement the free 12-year school education program in the region as promised by its governor and vice governor during their electoral campaigns, Vice Governor Said Assegaff said.
The amount had been set at Rp32 billion based on the results of a study by the local national education office and it would cover education at state as well as private schools, he said.
"The plan to spend Rp32 billion on the free 12-year education program will be coordinated with the National Education Department so that there will be no overlap with financing from the State (central government) Budget," Assegaff said.
He said the proposed Rp32 billion would mean the education sector in Maluku was taking 17 percent of the provincial budget or up from 11 percent so far.
"But Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu and I are determined to increase the percentage for education gradually to 20 percent of the provincial budget during our term in office which started last September 15," he said.
He said there was also the need to further implement the mission of the previous provincial administration under Governor Ralahalu and Vice Governor Mohammaad Abdullah Latuconsina to rebuild the infrastructure damaged during the social conflict that started in 1999 and continued for a few years, to lower the poverty level and create new job opportunities to reduce the high unemployment rate.
Other problems that also still needed to be settled were the fate of 12,080 families who had become displaced by the social conflict of 1999 and finding investors to explore and develop the province's human resources.
"Of course, optimum results can only be achieved if we also manage and oversee the bureaucracy properly, and eradicate corruption, collusion and nepotism," Assegaff said.
Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto when installing Ralahalu and Assegaff as Maluku governor and vice governor respectively reminded them not to lose the trust of the people who had supported them in the election.
"The public's trust and hopes should be responded to by materializing your vision and mission through strategic programs to create prosperity, order and security for the public," he said.
He also asked all components of the province's society to support Ralahalu and Assegaff with a critical comitment to actualize the vision and mission they had put forward during their electoral campaigns.
