PERHUTANI TO PLANT 3.4 MILLION TREES IN SUMENEP
Sumenep, Oct 17 (ANTARA) - State forestry company PT Perhutani will plant a total of 3,4 million trees on 1,100 hectares of land in Kangean islands, Sumenep district, Madura, by the end of this year, local Perhutani spokesman Bambang Catur said here on Friday.
He said the area for the trees' planting had been cleared and the needed tree seedlings were being made available.
"We plan to start planting the 3.4 million trees in December this year but we have to wait for enough rainfall to start the program," Catur said.
He said he would involve the local people, especially those of Forest Village Community Institute (LMDH), in the tree planting program.
"Besides their involvement in the tree planting program, they will also be tasked to nurse and protect the planted trees," he said.
According to him, Perhutani did have a synergy with LMDH in the realization of the Forest Management Program with the People (PHBH).
"PHBH is part of Perhuntaini's national program in an effort to encourage people living around the forests to get themselves involved in the management and protection of forests in Perhutani's working area," Catur said, adding that LMDH was actively involved in the PHBM program.
He said the kinds of trees to be planted in December this year were teak, mahogany, and eucalyptus.
