LAUNCHING OF IPWP IN LONDON INSIGNIFICANT EVENT : FM SPOKESMAN

Jakarta, Oct 17 (ANTARA) - The recent launching of an "International Parliamentarians for West Papua (IPWP)" group in London is an insignificant event, the Indonesian foreign ministry said.
"There was an impression it was a significant event. However, according to our own observation, the event was insignificant and involved only a small number of parliamentarians," the ministry's spokesman, Teuku Faizasyah, said here Friday.
"Out of Britain's 1,300 members of parliement, only two joined the event," he said.
"We do not need to overreact to the insignificant event which was designed according to the old pattern as it referred to the situation in Indonesia in the 90's to judge today's situation and conditions," he said.
The situation and conditions in Papua have improved since the implementation of regional autonomy in the province, said Faizasyah.
Friends of Indonesia in England and other countries, he added, had assured Indonesia not to worry about the event.
"The event had no impact on the British parliament's and government's support for Papua as part of the Unitary State of the Indonesian Republic," Faizasyah said.
"If we overreact to an insignificant event, we will only be justifying it," he added.
On October 15, the Free West Papua Campaign, a group demanding independence for Papua, launched an organization called International Parliementarians for West Papua in London, England. The exclusive group consists of about 30 people, including two British MPs, one Papua New Guinea and one Vanuatu MP and pro-independnece Papuans.
