MINISTER DENIES GENERAL ELECTION DESK TO BE FORMED "AT ALL COST"
Tebo, Jambi, Oct. 18 (ANTARA)- Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto has denied he would set up a 2009 general election desk in his ministry "at all cost" as reported by mass media recently.
"The setting up of an election desk is not due to my persistence but it only aims to make the 2009 general election a success and also to help the general election commission to get comparative data," Mardiyanto said in a dialogue with local community leaders, the provincial general election commission and general election supervisory agency here on Friday (Oct.17) night.
The minister, who was accompanied by Jambi Governor Zulkifli Nurdin, said the results of the vote count which would be published by the general election desk would be used merely as a comparision for the 2009 legislative and presidential general election, instead of showing off.
"The general election desk is not a tool for government intervention but the objective is only to assist. We need to do this in a spirit to make a just and fair general election a success," he said.
Although the government was not the general election organizer, it was obliged to show a good example so that preparations for the election which will be held on April 4, 2009 can run well.
A total of 48 political parties have registered thenselves to take part in the upcoming general election. While in 2004 the general election was only participated in by 24 political parties.***3***
