Denpasar, Bali Province, Oct. 20 (ANTARA) - An Indonesia Orchid Show 2008 is being held here from October 18 to 26, and participated in by five countries, namely Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan.
The orchid show was officially opened by Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, the wife of Vice President M Jusuf Kalla, here on Sunday.
Indonesia has a very large orchid genetic wealth, she said in her opening address.
The country has around 5,000 orchid species, or around one third of the world's total orchid species, she said.
"I hope Indonesia can optimally benefit from this natural resource so that it can become a main player in the world's orchid trade," she said.
The orchid show has 120 stands displaying orchids from various Indonesian regions as well as Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan.
Indonesia's orchid species are native to almost every part of the archipelago, growing in regions high above sea level. Among the famous orchid species growing in Indonesia are Vanda, Phalaenopsis, Phapiopedilum, and Dendrobium.
Kalimantan (Borneo) is home to the largest number of orchid species in the world while Sumatra has 986 species, Java more than 971, Maluku 123 and Papua more than 1,000, mainly Dendrobium and Bulbophyllum.
