RI TO RAISE CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUE AT BEIJING ASEM SUMMIT
Jakarta, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will raise the issue of climate change in the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit to be held in Beijing on October 24-25, a Foreign Ministry official said.
"There will be a number of issues in the agenda of the Indonesian government but one of the main issues is climate change. In fact, President (Susilo Bambang) Yudhoyono will specially speak on the issue at the forum," Director of Inter American and European Cooperation at the Foreign Ministry Dian Wirengjurit said here on Monday.
Indonesia had a strong commitment in addressing the issue of climate change as indicated by its active role in ensuring the success of the Bali Roadmap adopted in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Summit late last year, she said.
In addition, Indonesia would also raise other global issues of mutual concern, including food security, disaster management, manpower, trade and investment promotion, global and regional development, and sustainable development, she said.
She said the countries that would take part in the ASEM Summit had agreed to avoid discussing controverial issues.
"But it is likely the issues of Myanmar and Iran's nuclear power development will be discussed in the summit," she said adding the Europen Union had been paying great attention to the issues.
She said two Asian leaders were scheduled to speak on the Iranian nuclear issue at the summit.
"The agenda of the summit is still subject to change. But if I am not mistaken the speakers on the issue will come from Thailand and Indonesia," she said.
