AGUNG: GOLKAR'S PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO BE DETERMINED BY SURVEY RESULTS
Cirebon, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party Vice Chairman Agung Laksono said here on Monday the party would name its presidential candidate based on the results of a poll by an independent survey institute with priority to be given to its own cadre.
"In line with the results of the national leadership meeting Golkar will determine its presidential and vice presidential candidates based on the results of a survey as it is the people and not only Golkar members who will take part in the general elections," he told newsmen.
He said the names of a number of party figures proposed at a recent leadership meeting would be submitted to the survey institute that would later rank them according to the people's view.
"The results of the survey will then be used for consideration to determine who will be nominated as presidential and vice presidential candidates by the party," he said.
Regarding the raising of the names Agung said that it was also a kind of campaign to the people and proved that Golkar had many figures worth nomination.
"The nomination of a large number of figures also proves that Golkar has a number of capable figures with a good record and competence. Who will be named the presidential or vice presidential candidates by the party would be determined later after the legislative elections," he said.
He said coalition would also be done only after the legislative elections were concluded as it was only then that the strength of the country's political parties would be seen.
He said at least there would be three factors to determine parties Golkar would ask to coalesce with namely their platform, number of votes they were able to collect and the relationship between the parties' leaders with Golkar's leaders.
"Golkar is a nationalist religious party and it hopes it can coalesce with a party that collects significant votes," he said.
The vote number conditions are set because they are linked with the minimum vote requirement for nominating candidates, he said.
"Golkar still holds to a minimum 30 percent votes as a requirement for a party to be able to nominate presidential and vice presidential candidates. The percentage will be determined at a discussion in the House of Representatives today," he said.
Nominees raised by Golkar in the leadership meeting for presidential or vice presidential candidates include Jusuf Kalla, Surya Paloh, Agung Laksono, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, Aburizal Bakris, Akbar Tanjung, Muladi, Fadel Muhammad, Fahmi Idris and Yudhi Chrisnandi.
These figures will be introduced to the people later as the party's nominees but it is the results of the poll that will be used for consideration to determine who will be named as candidates.
