YLBHI BACKS HOUSE'S PLAN TO PROBE UNACCOUNTED DISAPPEARANCE OF PEOPLE
Jakarta, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) has thrown its weight behind the House of Representatives (DPR)'s plan to reactivate its special committee on unaccounted disappearence of persons in 1997 and 1998 despite allegations the formation of the committee is politically motivated.
"YLBHI appreciates and supports the plan as the community is waiting for (the special committee's move) to disclose the truth in the cases," YLBHI Chairman Patra Zen said here on Monday.
In addition, many quarters, the relatives of missing people in particular, were also waiting for the committee's move to uphold justice in the cases.
Asked to comment on allegations the committee's formation was politically motivated, he said they could be true, the more so because the committee was formed by a political institution of the state, namely the House.
"If (the special committee's formation) is really politically motivated, it is legitimate because it was formed by a political institution," he said.
He said he did not care about the allegations by many quarters that the committee's formation was politically motivated.
YLBHI's interest in supporting the plan to reactivate the committee was merely to uphold justice and truth so that the mystery about the people who went missing during the New Order government could be brought to light, he said.
