BULOG PROPOSES RP15 T BUDGET FOR SUBSIDIZED RICE FOR THE POOR IN 2009

Jakarta, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - The National Logistics Agency (Bulog) has proposed a Rp3 trillion increase in the State Budget allocation for the supply of subsidized rice to the poor (raskin) to Rp15 trillion in 2009 from Rp12 trillion in 2008.
"We have proposed that the budget for subsidized rice for the poor be raised to Rp15 trillion in 2009 from Rp12 trillion this year," Bulog President Director Mustafa Abubakar said before attending a closed-door meeting of the House of Representatives' budgetary committee here on Monday.
The volume of the subsidized rice for the poor in 2009 was projected to reach 3.4 million tons, he said.
He said the number of poor households that had the right to buy rice at subsidized price in 2009 would be the same as this year.
"Their number will remain at 19.1 million with each of them allowed to buy 15 kg at the subsidized price of Rp1,600 a kg. The subsidized rice for the poor will be made available for 12 months," he said.
Asked why Bulog came up with the proposal while at the same time the number of poor households allowed to buy the subsidized rice remained unchanged, Mustafa said the recent rise in rice prices was the reason behind the proposal.
In addition, the volume of subsidized rice sold to poor households in some areas this year was only 10 kg, he said.
By October 2008, Bulog had sold 2.45 million tons of subsidized rice to poor households, accounting for 88 percent of the target of 2.76 million tons for this year, he said.
