Jakarta, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - The ongoing financial crisis will be a topic of informal discussion at the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit to be held in Beijing, China, a Foreign Ministry official here said.
"The meeting will discuss the global financial crisis along with other issues such as encouraging sustainable development, climate change, deepening dialogue between civilizations, and promoting Asia-Europe trade and investment," Dian Wirengjurit, the ministry's director for America-Europe intra-regional cooperation, told a press conference here Monday.
However, Dian said, since the financial crisis was an unexpected event which occurred after the ASEM summit's agenda had been drawn up, the issue would be discussed at an informal meeting among the leaders of the 45 countries.
On the same occasion, French ambassador to Indonesia Philippe Zeller confirmed the financial crisis would be taken up by the ASEM summit. However, he said, there was no guarantee the meeting would yield a concrete consensus formulated in a declaration on the matter since it was tied to a very tight schedule.
ASEM was formed in 1996 with a membership comprising ASEAN's 10 member countries, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, 27 European Union countries, the ASEAN secretary general and the European Commission president.
Its biennual meetings work like forums for Asia and European countries to discuss topical priority issues and exchange ideas about them.
This year's ASEM in Beijing will have as theme "Vision and Actions : Towards a Win-win Solution".
