RI RATIFIES ASEAN CHARTER

Jakarta, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) at a plenary session here Tuesday approved the government's proposal to ratify the charter of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The spokesmen of all House factions in their statements at the plenary session led by Deputy Speaker Muhaimin Islandar agreed to pass the bill on the ASEAN Charter's ratification into law.
Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda who attended the House plenary session on the government's behalf expressed appreciation for the House's decision to discuss and endorse the bill.
He said the ASEAN Charter would open greater opportunities to all ASEAN member countries to materialize ASEAN values. Indonesia had done it utmost to bet these values incorporated in the charter.
The minister further said ASEAN member countries had agreed to form an ASEAN community in 2015 on the basis of three pillars -- political, economic and socio-cultural communities.
Under this framework, ASEAN member countries really realized that ASEAN needed to transform itself into an organization with clear procedures.
The ASEAN charter was signed by the ASEAN heads of government at the 13rd ASEAN Summit on November 23, 2007. ***1***
