SURVEY: MAJORITY OF PEOPLE DISSATISFIED WITH POLITICAL PARTIES' PERFORMANCE

Jakarta, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - Some 53 percent of the Indonesian people said they were dissatisfied with the performance of past political parties, while at least 49 percent of them lacked confidence in the present ones.

This was one of the results of an opinion poll on "Political reality in the run up to the 2009 General Elections" conducted by the Information Research Institution (LRI) published here on Tuesday.

According to Johan Silalahi, the LRI Executive Director, of the 2400 respondents covered from August 25 to September 7, 2008 in 33 provinces in the country, only 35 percent said they were satisfied with the performance of the political parties, while the rest (12 percent) said they has no idea.

As to the new political parties, the survey said 29 percent of the respondents also expressed satisfaction, while 22 percent said they did not know what to say.
However, at least 83 percent of the Indonesian people said they would cast their vite the 2009 general elections and only 3 percent chose not.

"Most of the people (72 percent) say that the reason for casting their vote is that they are entitled to it, and 40 percent say they will not take part in the general elections because none of the political parties represent their aspirations," Johan said.

In the survey using the multi-stage clusters sampling method and a 95 percent confidence rate, the popularity rate of the parties taking part in the elections was measured.

The survey showed that Golkar has the highest popularity rate of 33.9 percent, followed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle with 28.1 percent.
