TNI COMMANDER: MALAYSIA STILL COMMITTING TERRITORIAL VIOLATIONS IN AMBALAT

Jakarta, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - National Defense Forces (TNI) Commander General Djoko Santoso said here on Tuesday elements of Malaysia's armed forces were still frequently committing territotial violations in Ambalat.

Speaking at a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I which was also attended by Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, he said at several meetings with Indonesia, Malaysia was continuing to claim the block as part of its territory.

"This can be seen in the copy of a Malaysian diplomatic note on the process of TNI forces deployment in the Ambalat Block," he said.

In view of this condition, he said, Indonesia would intensify deployment of its forces around the block and in North Sulawesi in the form of sea and air patrols.

"It will be part of our efforts to deter and match the presence of Malaysian armed forces elements there," he said.

The 15,235 square kilometer Ambalat block is rich in oil and gas reserves which could be exploited for 30 years.

Djoko said Indonesia still had border problems with a number of countries such as Malaysia, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea.

"In general, TNI has already deployed troops in 12 outer most islands bordering Malaysia, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea," he said.

About the problem of the country's border with Malaysia in Kalimantan, he said negotiations were still continuing. The two countries could not as yet achieve an agreement on principles and marks for use in the martime border in the Malacca Strait, the Singapore Strait, the South China Sea and the Sulawesi waters (territorial sea, additional continental shelf zone for Exclusive Economic Zone).

Six locations in the border with Timor Leste that were still problematic weree located in Noelbesi (Kupang), Bijaelsunan Oben, Tububanat, Nefonungo, Imbate Nainanban, Sungakain Ninulat, Memo Dilomli, Foho Aikakar, Fohotakis and Kalanfehan in the Belu district.

The problem of maritime border with Timor Leste is in the Batek island," he said.

On vulnarability in the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border region Djoko said that it remained because there were still a lot of traditional border crossers there in addition to existing members of the Free Papua Organization living in Papua New Guinea.
