President, UN-Arab League Envoy Call For Bringing Peace To Syria

Tehran, Oct 15, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and UN and Arab League joint envoy on Syria in a meeting in Tehran on Sunday reiterated on the necessity for establishing peace and tranquility in Syria on the basis of a national reconciliation.
“Islamic Republic of Iran categorically believes that electing the leaders, freedom and justice are the right of the nations and no one can tell the nations what do in this regard,” President Ahmadinejad said.
He pointed out that conflict in Syria means increasing the scope of insecurity in the entire region and the efforts aimed at disintegrating Syria given its tribal structure is tantamount to constant insecurity for continued decades.
Lakhdar Brahimi for his part while briefing Salehi on the latest developments in Syria and his mission in the Arab country, called for Iran’s help for bringing stability and security in Syria on the basis of national compromise and reconciliation.
The UN Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in Tehran Sunday evening to hold talks with Iranian officials on the Syrian crisis.
He was welcomed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African affairs, Amir Hossein Abdollahiyan at Mehrabad Airport.
His visit to Tehran takes place in line with Tehran’s diplomatic efforts to help solve the crisis in the Arab state.
He is scheduled to discuss the latest developments in Syria with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi during his visit in Iran, the first since he took over the mission as UN envoy.
He will also talk with Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili.
Prior to Tehran, Brahimi earlier toured Saudi Arabia and Turkey to discuss Syrian developments. He will also visit Baghdad after Tehran./end
