HASAN TIRO ASKS ACEH PEOPLE TO MAINTAIN PEACE
Banda Aceh, Oct. 22 (ANTARA) - Former Free Aceh Movement (GAM) leader Hasan Tiro is reported to have asked all elements in Aceh to maintain the prevailing peace in the province.
"Tiro expressed the hope at a luncheon with the chairman of the Aceh-Nias Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency (BRR), Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, at the Pidie district administration building in Sigli on Tuesday," Juanda Djamal, a BRR spokesman said here on Wednesday.
Tiro also said now was the time to develop Aceh and pay serious attention to development in Aceh, Indonesia's western most province.
At the meeting, Tiro also asked the BRR chief about the latest developments in the reconstruction process in the aftermath of the tsunami which devastated the province and caused the death and disappearance of more than 200,000 people. .
"Hasan Tiro asked BRR to play a role in preserving the forests and the environment of Aceh. He wants forests and beautiful beaches in Aceh to be well taken care of," he said.
Prior to the meeting with Hasan Tiro, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto symbolically handed assets consisting of facilities built by BRR and other parties worth Rp178.5 billion to the Pidie district administration.
The assets included houses, medical and education facilities, which were developed by foreign and domestic NGOs and donors.
