HOUSE PROTESTS AGAINST MALAYSIA FOR FREQUENT TERRITORY VIOLATIONS
Jakarta, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday lodged a protest against elements of Malaysia's armed forces for frequently violating territorial borders between the two countries, particularly in Ambalat off East Kalimantan's coast.
"We protest against the Malaysia's act," DPR Chairman Agung Laksono said at the parliament building here.
The protest came a day after National Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Gen Djoko Santoso said elements of Malaysia's armed forces were still frequently committing territorial violations in Ambalat.
Djoko said at several meetings with Indonesia, Malaysia was continuing to claim the block as part of its territory.
"This can be seen in the copy of a Malaysian diplomatic note on the process of TNI forces deployment in the Ambalat Block," he said.
Agung said Malaysia's violation of territorial borders with Indonesia was against the ASEAN Charter which had been signed by all ASEAN memner states.
"The act is provocation. Malaysia must stop it," he said adding the House, along with the government must protest against the act to prevent it from recurrence.
He said the violation of territorial borders could disrupt relations between the two countries. "It is very regrettable that Malaysia as our neighbor is committing the act," he said.
The Ambalat and Bukat blocks off East Kalimantan's coast are part of the Indonesian territory. The government has assured Zaitem, a subsidiary of ENI SpA of Italy, of its continued exploration rights in the blocks.
The 15,235 square kilometer Ambalat block is rich in oil and gas reserves which could be exploited for 30 years.
