RI`S CANNED TUNA EXPORTS TO US DOWN 40 PCT
Jakarta, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's canned tuna exports to the US have fallen by up to 40 percent since the financial crisis engulfed the latter, the Indonesian Association of Canned Fish Producers (APIKI) said.
The US, along with Europe and Japan were the main market for Indonesia's tuna and therefore, the impact of the financial crisis engulfing the countries was inevitable, APIKI Chairman Hendri Sutandinata said here on Wednesday.
"Nearly 60 percent of buyers in those countries want the shipment of canned tuna postponed for one month," he said on the sidelines of a get-together between Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi and national fishery stakeholders.
The financial crisis also had led to a drop in the price of canned tuna to US35 from US$41 per box in the US, he said.
As a consequence, the domestic canned tuna producers had slashed their production by up to 20 percent of the current 120,000 tons per year, he said.
The domestic canned tuna industry had a production capacity of 300,000-350,000 tons per year. But because of the low demand, they planned to produce 120,000 tons per year, he said.
Currently, Indonesia's canned tuna exports reached 120,000 tons, 70 percent of which went to the US and the rest to Europe, he said.
"Demand for Indonesia's canned tuna in the export market currently falls by up to 10 percent," he said.
