S KOREAN TEXTILE COMPANIES EXPECT IMPROVEMENT IN INVESTMENT CLIMATE

Jakarta, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - South Korean textile businessmen are expecting improvement in the investment climate in Indonesia to make investment really profitable.

The businessmen grouped in the Korea Federation of Textile Industries (Kofoti) voiced the hope at an Indonesia-Korea Apparel and Textile Industrial Forum here on Wednesday.

Seventeen Korean textile and garment companies attended the forum organized by the Kofoti and the Indonesia Textile Association (API).

API deputy chairman Ade Sudradjat said the Korean businessmen considered Indonesia possessing skilled workers that could produce quality textile and garments while they said they could send the best textile technology into the country by way of technology transfer.

He said Korea wished to be able to produce textile and garments in Indonesia and export them throughout the world that would benefit Indonesia.

"Korea is interested to make investment in the textile and garment industry, which may absorb a lot of workers and the realization is quick," he said.

API executive secretary EG Ismy meanwhile said at present there were 60 Korean garment factories operating in Indonesia with a total investment of US$30 billion.

He said Korea wished that more Indonesian garment products could be exported to Korea because 65 percent of such products in Korea had been imported from China.

Ismy said that 36 percent of Indonesian textiles and garments had been exported to the US, 16 percent to Europe, five to six percent to Japan, and 7.21 percent to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries, and the rest to 200 other countries.

He said until now no special treatment was given in Indonesia's exports and imports activities Korea. It is hoped there would be increased cooperation between the two countries to provide more facilities in the export-import activities.

The South Korean businessmen on the occasion hoped that the Indonesia-Australia bilateral cooperation could be realized so that the Free Trade Agreement could be implemented.

They believed business to business cooperation with Australia could generate foreign exchange income for the country and profit for Korean companies operating in Indonesia.
