MFA:No Thais in hurricane-hit New York seek help

BANGKOK, October 30 (TNA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that no Thai nationals in Hurricane Sandy-hit New York have sought assistance from the Thai Consulate in the US most populous city, except 3-4 Thai tourists whose flights from New York were canceled on October 28. Damrong Kraikruan, Deputy Director-General of the ministry's Department of Information, told journalists Tuesday that the Thai Consulate had warned Thai people in New York of the Hurricane Sandy a few days in advance and they had been evacuated timely, together with local Americans. For the Thai nationals whose flights were canceled, Damrong said that the Thai Consulate in New York had arranged for their accommodation at a Thai temple, affirming that the Thai Consulate is ready to assist all Thai people in such the emergency situation. According to the senior Thai official, the Sandy storm had already passed New York and was weakening although strong winds and heavy downpours have continued in affected areas with 1-2 feet-deep-floods, caused by a high tide, and blackouts.
