GRENADE ATTACK ON KPA OFFICE IN ACEH

Banda Aceh, Oct 23 (ANTARA) - Unidentified men attacked the Aceh Transitional Committee (KPA) office in the Lampaseh area in Banda Aceh with a grenade at 2:30 on Thursday morning, KPA member Husri said.

"We saw two motorcycles from the north racing toward the KPA office and 15 minutes later we heard a grenade explosion," Husri said.

Husri admitted he and three friends, namely Asnawi (25), Yusuf (38), and Munadir (24), spent the night at the KPA office and at about 2:30 am when they were sound asleep, they were awakened by the sound of a grenade explosion.

The explosion damaged two cars, a wall, and glass window panes.

Aceh Police spokesman Senior Commissioner Ilsaruddin said a grenade pin and pieces of shrapnel were found at the scene but the type of grenade was not known as the shrapnel still needed to be examined at the laboratory.

"We have yet to know the type of the grenade but according to eye witnesses, the blast was quite big," Ilsaruddin said, adding that the grenade attack on the KPA office was similar to that on the house of former GAM (Free Aceh Movement) commander Muzakkir Manaf last September.

Meanwhile, KPA spokesman Ibrahim bin Syamsuddin strongly condemned the grenade attack, saying the incident as well as the torching of the Aceh Party office recently were part of a political attack.

"We strongly condemn the incident because it really disturbs the Aceh people who have started to enjoy peace in the province," Ibrahim said.
